I've noticed a lot more tolerance for Christmas here in Japan, too, such as newscasters wearing cross necklaces on TV, or Silent Night playing in convenience stores, etc. But most Japanese really don't have a grasp of the true meaning, with most celebrating it because it seems cool or foreign. One of our friends teaches 6th grade students here, and she said a lot of them thought that Christmas is Santa's birthday. Christmas Eve seems to be more of a romantic evening for couples, whereas Christmas Day is pretty much like any other day. Have you noticed this? And even though the word "Christmas" is everywhere as you point out, lately we've been having a hard time finding Christmas cards with anything to do with Jesus. Most of them have Santa type decorations with phrases like "The Season's Best Wishes and a Happy New Year" on them.
