My team member will be putting an article on the significance of Sabbath in the New Covenant.

Col 2:16-17 clearly teaches us that Sabbath was a shadow of things to come and the reality was found in Christ Jesus. When Jesus said, "It is finished". The work of the Cross was over.

If you read Hebrews 3 and 4 you will realize that those who believe enter the rest. The Israelites heard the message just as we did but they did not combine what they heard with faith hence God said, 'They shall not enter My rest". Paul was talking about what happened in Meribah and Massah. How they grumbled and complained and refused to believe the Lord who had promised them a land flowing with milk and honey [Canaan]. And therefore they died outside Canaan and was not allowed to enter it.

We are no longer obligated to observe Sabbath. But anyone is free to observe it as long as he or she doesn't make it a rule.

You're correct Paul. It is used to describe God's rest on the seventh day (Saturday). I don't see anything wrong with Christians working on Sunday as long as they take another day off.

From my understanding, the word 'Sabbath' means 'to rest'.

Yet far too many Christians are put to work by churches on Sundays, forgoing the example set by God in Genesis.

No wonder so many people are tired and worn out.

I agree with all of you. My day of rest and worship (as in "going to church") is and has always been Sunday, but I fail to see anything wrong with doing it on another day.

I pretty much agree with you on this...

I'm part of too many ministries that expect people to work for 10 days straight sometimes.

I think that I would have voted like you Casey. Of course, for me any way, Sunday.. especially Sunday morning.. is a work day.. pastors work on Sunday :)

Seriously, I think that Hebrews 4 is what I think of when I hear the word Sabbath:

<i>"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.</i>

Sabbath to me is trusting in the finished work of the cross.. it is ceasing from worry.. ceasing from fear.. ceasing from being in control of my life. It is, as I have preached: <a href="http://eye4redemption.blogspot.com/2008/03/strenghth-in-weakness.html" rel="nofollow">Strength in Weakness</a> .. sorry for the shameless sermon plug.

Happy St Patrick's Day
