When did God create the angels?

I’ve already forgotten what got me thinking about this, but for some reason I began wondering where angels fit into the creation. At first consideration, I thought they would have been created in Genesis 1. However, 1) they definitely would have been mentioned there if that was when they were created, and 2) since they are spiritual beings, there’s no reason to assume they were created at the same time as the physical universe. In fact, in the book of Job, angels are said to have been rejoicing when God created the universe. This definitely puts their creation before man’s. John MacArthur says:

Apparently angels were created before time began–before the material universe was brought into existence. It’s obvious that angels were created before man because some of them had fallen by the time Satan tempted Eve to sin.

Job 38:7 says that “the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” What are the angels (the morning stars) singing and shouting about? Just before, God said to Job, “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?… Who hath laid the measures of it, if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are its foundation fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (vv. 4-7). So the angelic hosts were rejoicing at the creation of the earth, so we know their creation predates that.

That link actually provides a good collection of verses for study if you’re interested in the topic. I also recommend ibelieveinangels.com. Linda has done a great job compiling a good repository of Bible-based information on angels.

My wife is convinced she has a guardian angel. I, in typical male fashion, have dismissed this as unfounded nonsense, but my wife has an uncanny “luck” about her. She does indeed seem protected. I suspect I may have to swallow my pride (but don’t tell her that!)

    LOL, Robert.

My wife doesn’t believe in guardian angels, but she has that uncanny “luck” about her.

I am inclined to think that we the husbands are their blessings, but don’t tell our wives that! :-P
