Most non-Christians tend to reject as automatically flawed any opinions based upon the Bible or Biblical principles, yet they readily espouse opinions that are much farther out the mainstream than anything supported by the Bible. These folks tend to be a bit closed-minded, and I have yet to find an effective way of engaging them in a productive conversation.

I think you did the right thing in bowing out early. It does no good to get in debate with someone who's eyes are closed.

p.s. I use "deep as a sidewalk puddle". :)

God bless.

Unfortunately high profile Christians give atheists plenty of fodder.. pedophiles posing as RC priests.. greedy televangelists.. cloaked homosexulas in evangelical leadership.. dogmatic young earthists.. and the beat goes on.. and we have to deal with the aftermath of it.

I think that the church ceded our prophetic role in society when we joined the Republican party. It is sad that we in the church are really no different than the rest of our culture when it comes to morality issues like divorce percentages. I guess that is why many have a disdain for us.. we talk a good talk but often fail to deliver.. of course then there are those plain old dogmatic liberals that you talked about.

I guess our job is just to show them a bit of kindness as we go.. living out the sermon on the mount whenever we get a chance :)
